Children continue to be the most fragile and completely innocent victims of the AIDS epidemic. None of them are even remotely aware that a devastating disease threatens their lives and futures. Most of the children eligible for enrollment at Hope House are in a highly disadvantaged and at-risk environment.
Each day they are surrounded by poverty, crime, and drug infestation due to their geographic locations within the city's poorest communities. Not only are they dealing with the circumstances of poverty but also life in a household that is plagued with sickness and secrecy.
Recent Shelby County Health Department statistics indicate that the number of women infected with the HIV virus continues to grow. Five years ago, women in Shelby County represented 22% of the area's HIV population - recent demographics now show them at 28%. Most startling of all is that 93% of these women are African-American. Because of the unique situations many of our children are in, Hope House has to provide care that is designed to go beyond traditional day care. At Hope House, we: Ensure, from the start, that our children are ready to learn, physically and emotionally.
Set high expectations for every child, monitor the child's progress continually, and intervene quickly when problems arise.
Create high-quality, varied learning environments that support each child's learning and emotional development.
Provide quality professional development to those directly responsible for children's education and development.
Actively engage parents in their children's education and emotional stability at home.
Accept responsibility and accountability for our children's healthy emotional development.Make efficient, equitable use of resources for children's emotional well being.
Collaborate closely with other organizations or programs that could positively affect our children's emotional well being. | | Our children receive: Love, affection and attention not so often given at home.
Direct interaction with others as opposed to sitting in front of a television all day.
A functional, adequate, and safe enclosed playground for healthy imaginative play.
Positive reinforcement for successes and accomplishments.
The foundation to form a positive self-image
And we encourage parents to use alternative discipline vs. physical punishment. |
